Homage Session – Hugh Masekela

On the occasion of the South African “Freedom Day” on April 27th we celebrate this year’s international Jazz Day with the kick-off of a new concert series HOMAGE SESSION with a musical homage to the jazz legend Hugh Masekela.
HOMAGE SESSION presented by Werkstatt Der Kulturen Berlin is a series of jazz jam sessions on Sunday afternoons in 2018 and dedicated to great personality of jazz.
Little Big Band under the direction of Fuasi Abdul-Khaliq plays in this edition of HOMAGE SESSION, works of the South African trumpeter, wing horn player, cornetist, pianist, singer and composer who died in January of this year, and anti-apartheid Fighter Hugh Ramapolo Masekela.

Hugh Ramapolo Masekela (born 4 April 1939 in Witbank; † 23 January 2018 in Johannesburg ), also known as Bra Hugh, was a South African trumpeter, cornetist, pianist, singer and composer. He is one of the most important pioneers of jazz and world music from South Africa. He was nominated three times for a Grammy and won numerous other awards.
