Heritage Day 2016

We invite you to a panel discussion on Monday, 26th September at 19:00, at the Afrika Center Berlin, Hohenstaufenstr. 3, 10781 Berlin-Schöneberg.

IDENTIFYING HERITAGE: Thoughts and practices on traditions, practices and identity in a diverse South African society

“When our first democratically-elected government decided to make Heritage Day one of our national days, we did so because we knew that our rich and varied cultural heritage has a profound power to help build our new nation.

For our public discussion on the topic IDENTIFYING HERITAGE, we believe the above quotation – made by our former President Nelson Mandela in an address marking Heritage Day (24.09.) in 1996 – should serve to remind us of the importance of Heritage and – more specifically – Heritage Day in the South African context. We sincerely hope that the part of the quotation – heritage has a profound power to help build our nation – will help to guide the discussion in an interesting manner.

We shall introduce the topic through a panel of individuals who will give their own thoughts, interpretations and insights on the question of heritage. This will be followed by a forum discussion which will consist of the panel discussants as well as the public in an open exchange.
